Project: Greater Copenhagen, Denmark

Geothermal in Greater Copenhagen

Innargi is collaborating with Denmark’s largest waste management and energy company, Vestforbrænding, to establish a geothermal heating plant which are to supply 10.000 households with greener district heating north of Copenhagen by the end of 2028.

Vestforbrænding is servicing approximately 1 million citizens. The company is currently expanding their district heating network to convert 39.000 new customers from gas- and oil boilers to district heating and geothermal will become one of their future heat sources in combination with surplus heat and CO2.

Latest news from project

In 2024, we carried out seismic surveys in parts of North Zealand. Special trucks followed a specific route to map the subsurface and obtain a detailed picture of the geological layers.

The purpose of the surveys was to assess the potential for geothermal energy in the area and support the work of identifying the most suitable location for a possible geothermal facility.

Since the surveys were completed, we have been analysing the data to gain a better understanding of the subsurface conditions in the area. The results form part of the continued development of the project.

MW Total Capacity

IN BRIEF

Capacity and demand

The planned capacity of the geothermal heating plants is 25 MW which convert to the supply of approximately 10.000 households every year.

The planned geothermal plant will expand Vestforbrænding’s total heat capacity for district heating by 12,5% covering a total of 69.000 households.

Project Timeline

If everything goes to plan, the geothermal facilities are to be completed in 2028 with an expected operation of at least 30 years.

Expected project timeline

01.

2024

To ensure the best possible location for the geothermal facility, we carried out seismic surveys in the area. The surveys have helped map the subsurface and provide the foundation for the continued development of the project.

02.

2025-2026

We continue to analyse data, plan the project, and carry out the necessary environmental assessments and permitting processes.

03.

2027

We prepare the site and begin establishing the two geothermal wells as part of the development of the future facility.

04.

Winter 2027

Construction of geothermal plant.

05.

2028

We deliver the first geothermal heat to Vestforbrænding’s district heating network.

06.

2029-2059

Operation and maintenance.

LATEST MILESTONE

Vestforbrænding and Innargi are bringing geothermal energy to Greater Copenhagen

Vestforbrænding and Innargi signed a contract to explore and implement geothermal heating solutions to Vestforbrænding’s district heating system. Seismic surveys of the subsurface are currently being conducted, which will help to find the most suitable locations. Following this, the possible location will be reviewed and approved by the municipality.
