Seismic surveys will assess the potential of geothermal energy for heating in Łódź

Seismic surveys will assess the potential of geothermal energy for heating in Łódź

News • August 1, 2025

On 11 August 2025, Innargi and Geofizyka Toruń will begin seismic surveys to assess the potential of geothermal resources in Łódź and the surrounding area. Geothermal energy could provide up to approximately 200 MW of energy per year.

In the first half of August, seismic surveys will begin in Łódź to provide information on the geothermal potential of the city and its surroundings. The research is part of a project launched in October 2024 by Veolia Energia Polska, Veolia Energia Łódź, the City of Łódź and Innargi. Its aim is to use renewable geothermal energy in the Łódź district heating system. The research will provide detailed knowledge that will form the basis for further work on this project.

Deep underground, there is hot water that can be extracted to the surface for use in the city’s heating system. This energy source is called geothermal energy, and existing data indicates that its potential in Łódź is significant. To verify this, Innargi, a company specialising in the development of geothermal projects, will conduct seismic surveys in Łódź along a route of approximately 160 kilometres. They will begin on 11 August.

We are delighted to be taking another step towards harnessing the potential of geothermal energy for district heating in Łódź. We already know that Łódź, like the rest of Poland, has good conditions for using this stable and natural source of energy. Seismic surveys will give us more detailed knowledge about the structure beneath the earth’s surface. They will also allow us to check where faults occur, how deep the geothermal water is and what its temperature is.

Samir Abboud

CEO at Innargi

The seismic surveys are a continuation of the strategic partnership announced last October between Veolia, Innargi and the City of Łódź.

For Veolia, the decarbonisation of the Łódź heating system, based in part on renewable energy sources, is of key importance. The introduction of geothermal energy into our fuel mix will be an important step in the implementation of our green transition strategy. The cooperation with Innargi will allow us to assess the potential of geothermal sources in our city in the first stage, and then the scale of their application for heating purposes within the district heating system managed by Veolia. Geothermal energy, as a renewable energy source, always has a significant impact on reducing CO₂ emissions and thus on meeting the environmental challenges facing the energy sector in Poland.

Anna Kędziora-Szwagrzak

President of the Management Board and CEO of Veolia Energia Łódź

“The start of seismic surveys is an important moment for Łódź and our residents. The surveys that are just beginning may open up completely new opportunities for us in terms of using our city’s natural resources. Geothermal energy is not only clean, local energy, but also an opportunity for greater energy independence and security of heat supply for the residents of Łódź. We are convinced that investing in renewable energy sources is the best way to build a modern, environmentally friendly city. It is also an important step towards achieving the goal we have set for ourselves – climate neutrality. Cooperation with experienced partners such as Veolia and Innargi gives us confidence that the project will be carried out professionally and to the highest standards. Thanks to this, Łódź can be a pioneer in the use of geothermal energy on such a large scale.”

Hanna Zdanowska

Mayor of Łódź

What do the seismic surveys look like?

The research will be conducted by specialised vehicles the size of garbage trucks. They will travel along four planned routes and send short vibrations into the ground at successive measurement points. These will be received by geophones – special devices that will be placed along the routes in advance. The geophones will record signals that will be used to create a geological map of the earth’s interior.

Seismic surveys are completely safe for residents and the environment. The frequency of the short-term vibrations is too low to have any impact on buildings. The survey will be closely monitored by a team of specialists at all times.

People living near the routes in question will be able to hear the vehicles and feel short-term vibrations for a maximum of 20 seconds. After approximately 10-20 minutes, the vehicles will move on to the next measurement point. Measurements will be taken between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. to minimise disruption to traffic.

On behalf of Innargi, the seismic surveys will be carried out by an experienced Polish company, Geofizyka Toruń. The surveys will take approximately 4 weeks. Innargi geologists will then analyse the data and develop detailed geological maps that will be used for further work.

Local, stable heat for thousands of households

Geothermal energy is not new in Poland – the first plant using geothermal energy for heating residents was launched in Podhale in 1992. The project in Łódź is part of Veolia’s long-term strategy to decarbonise the city’s heating system, including through the development of renewable energy sources. Geothermal energy is a potential source of local, stable and environmentally friendly heat. The parties involved in the project estimate that geothermal energy could provide up to 200 MW of heat per year, which would account for approximately 15% of the heat capacity currently available in the Łódź district heating system.

However, the successful results of the geothermal potential analysis do not necessarily mean that the project will be implemented. This will depend on many factors, including the need to meet all legal and procedural requirements for this type of investment.

About seismic surveys

Seismic surveys will begin on 11 August on four planned routes around the city and in Łódź itself. The routes cover approximately 160 kilometres.

ABOUT THE PARTNERS IN THE PROJECT

Innargi A/S

Innargi’s mission is to decarbonise heating by bringing geothermal heat to millions of homes. It accomplishes this through the expertise of an experienced team of geologists and reservoir, installation and drilling engineers, as well as through partnerships with heating companies and local governments. Innargi is responsible for both feasibility studies and the extraction of hot water from underground and its delivery to Veolia Energia Łódź if the project is implemented.

Innargi A/S was founded in 2017 by A.P. Moller Holding A/S, whose shareholders are ATP (Denmark’s largest pension fund) and NRGi (customer-owned utility company).

Veolia Energia

Veolia Energia Łódź is one of the largest energy companies in Poland, whose core business is the production of district heating and electricity in cogeneration and the management of a district heating network. Veolia Energia Łódź continues the over 115-year history of the Łódź energy sector, being a recognised partner of the city and contributing to the development of its infrastructure. In line with the group’s sustainable development policy, the company creates and implements innovative, energy-efficient solutions that are optimal for the environment and local communities. Veolia Energia Łódź, bearing in mind the environmental challenges facing the energy sector, is implementing a strategy to decarbonise the Łódź heating system through ecological transformation.

Veolia supplies district heating to approximately 60% of Łódź’s consumers. It supplies heat to the largest investments in the city, including industrial plants, public utilities, shopping centres and service centres. District heating from the Łódź system is also supplied to Konstantynów Łódzki.
